Learning objective
Connect VTA projections and learned behavior while separating reinforcement, pleasure and adaptation.
A connected circuit
The chapter emphasizes dopamine projections from VTA to nucleus accumbens and connected cortical and limbic regions. Amygdala contributes emotional associations, hippocampus contributes memory and context, and prefrontal regions contribute planning and control. These structures interact; no single transmitter or location fully explains addiction.
Reinforcement is a behavioral relationship
A consequence is reinforcing when it increases the likelihood of a behavior. Positive reinforcement adds a consequence; negative reinforcement removes an aversive condition. Both can increase behavior. “Negative” does not mean punishment. Pleasure, motivation, learned predictions and behavioral repetition are related but not identical. Dopamine is not a direct meter that assigns a fixed amount of pleasure to every event.
Repeated exposure changes the system
The book describes repeated drug exposure, adaptation and reduced responsiveness to some nondrug rewards, alongside strengthened responses to drug-related cues. Initial reward and relief from distress or withdrawal can both contribute to repeated use. These are explanatory pathways rather than an inevitable sequence for every person. Different drugs have different primary targets even when some downstream circuits overlap.
Read receptor images cautiously
A group difference in receptor availability is an association. It might reflect prior vulnerability, exposure-related adaptation, other group differences or more than one influence. A brain scan comparison alone cannot tell which explanation is correct, diagnose an individual or prove that all addiction has one dopamine cause.

Explain it without notes
Trace the mesolimbic anchor and add two connected functions.
Compare your explanation 1
VTA → nucleus accumbens is the anchor. Hippocampal context, amygdala-associated salience and prefrontal control help explain why the circuit is broader than that one projection.
Why does a receptor difference not prove a pre-existing cause?
Compare your explanation 2
It may arise after exposure or share other causes with the behavior. Temporal or experimental evidence is needed to distinguish explanations.
