Course notes and existing practice
Learning objective
Use biological, psychological, and social factors together when explaining variation in drug effects.
Three interacting perspectives
The course’s biological perspective includes biochemical systems and genetic differences. Its psychological perspective includes needs, beliefs, mental state, and individual experience. Its social perspective includes cultural narratives and the setting in which drug use occurs. These are complementary levels of explanation.
Time course and individual differences
The deck also highlights delivery and time course, stress, and expectations. A shared molecular action does not imply identical behavioral outcomes in every person or setting. The course frames understanding drug use and addiction as broader than either a chemical label or prohibition alone.
Biopsychosocial perspective
An explanation that considers biological, psychological, and social influences together.
Individual differences
Variation between people that can matter for their responses and experiences.
