Learning objective
Place major brain structures in their divisions and distinguish an anatomical location from a transmitter pathway.
Start with the map
The central nervous system includes brain and spinal cord; the peripheral nervous system includes neural structures outside them. The forebrain includes diencephalon and telencephalon. Thalamus and hypothalamus are diencephalic structures. Cerebral cortex and major basal-ganglia structures belong to the telencephalon. The hindbrain includes medulla, pons and cerebellum. Brain stem refers to medulla, pons and midbrain; cerebellum is not another name for brain stem.
Use functions as relationships
Thalamic circuits relay and process information exchanged with cortex. Hypothalamic circuits help regulate internal state and endocrine/autonomic functions. Basal-ganglia circuits contribute to movement and action selection; the cerebellum contributes to coordination and balance. Hippocampus, amygdala and cingulate regions participate in memory, emotional learning and integration. These are overlapping systems, not one structure for each feeling.
Connect locations to pathways
A transmitter pathway has cell bodies, axons and targets. Dopamine neurons in substantia nigra project to striatal motor circuits; VTA dopamine projections include nucleus accumbens and prefrontal cortex. Saying “dopamine is in the brain” is less informative than naming the origin and target. The same transmitter can contribute to different functions through different projections and receptors.
| Structure | Useful association |
|---|---|
| Medulla / pons / midbrain | Brain-stem structures; vital regulation, arousal and transmission pathways. |
| Thalamus / hypothalamus | Information exchange with cortex / internal-state and endocrine regulation. |
| Hippocampus / amygdala | Memory and context / emotional learning and salience. |
| Substantia nigra / VTA | Origins of distinct dopamine projections. |
| Cortex | Distributed sensory, motor and cognitive processing; prefrontal regions contribute to planning and control. |

Explain it without notes
Name the three components of brain stem and locate cerebellum relative to that grouping.
Compare your explanation 1
Medulla, pons and midbrain form the brain stem. Cerebellum is a hindbrain structure adjacent to it, not one of those three components.
Why is “the reward center” an incomplete description?
Compare your explanation 2
Reward-related learning involves connected regions including VTA, nucleus accumbens, cortex, amygdala and hippocampus. No single label replaces the circuit.
