Learning objective
Explain how an ionotropic receptor couples ligand binding to its own ion channel.
Receptor and channel together
An ionotropic receptor contains the channel whose activity changes with ligand binding. The course calls these ligand-gated receptors and emphasizes their rapid effects on ion flow. The ligand binds at a receptor site; ions move through the channel. These roles remain distinct.
Subunits and consequences
The receptor is assembled from protein subunits. The deck compares subunit compositions to show that receptors within a broad family can differ. The electrical consequence depends on the channel and cell conditions, so ionotropic should not be treated as a synonym for excitatory. NMDA is an ionotropic example with additional activation conditions covered separately.
Ionotropic receptor
A receptor containing the ion channel controlled by ligand binding.
Receptor subunit
A protein component that assembles with others into a receptor.
Ionotropic receptor contains its channel. GPCR signals through G protein and effector to a separate channel. Boxes group related structures; positions are illustrative, not anatomical scale. Read the accompanying lesson for causal and alternative routes.
