Course notes and existing practice
Learning objective
Classify a receptor by compatibility, mechanism, location, and host-neuron context independently.
Several independent questions
The course identifies receptors through what binds to them, where they are located, whether they include an ion channel, and their subunits. A receptor name does not answer all these questions. Presynaptic, postsynaptic, extrasynaptic, and intracellular describe location relative to structures, not transmitter compatibility.
Auto and hetero require context
An autoreceptor responds to the transmitter that its host neuron releases. A heteroreceptor responds to a different transmitter from the host neuron’s own output. The same compatibility label can therefore have different roles in different cells. Do not infer auto/hetero solely from a presynaptic/postsynaptic label.
Autoreceptor
A receptor for the transmitter released by the neuron on which it is located.
Heteroreceptor
A receptor for a transmitter different from the transmitter released by its host neuron.
Extrasynaptic
Located outside the synaptic contact region.
Ionotropic receptor contains its channel. GPCR signals through G protein and effector to a separate channel. Boxes group related structures; positions are illustrative, not anatomical scale. Read the accompanying lesson for causal and alternative routes.
