Trace acetylcholine synthesis, breakdown, and choline recycling, and locate the course’s cholinergic pathway examples.
Building and breaking down ACh
The deck introduces precursor supply and synthesis within the neuron. Its acetylcholine (ACh) example combines acetyl coenzyme A and choline. After release, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) breaks ACh into choline and acetate in the synaptic cleft. Choline is taken into the terminal and reused to make ACh. This is breakdown followed by precursor recycling, not uptake of intact ACh.
Pathway orientation
The pathway diagram labels basal forebrain structures including nucleus basalis and the medial septal nucleus/diagonal band, with projections toward cortical and hippocampal regions. It also labels pedunculopontine and laterodorsal tegmental nuclei. These examples connect transmitter chemistry to anatomically distributed systems; no single function is assigned to every ACh synapse.
Acetylcholine
ACh, the transmitter formed from acetyl coenzyme A and choline in the course example.
Acetylcholinesterase
AChE, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the illustrated cleft.
Precursor
A starting material used to synthesize another molecule.
Choline
A precursor recycled into the terminal after acetylcholine breakdown.

Julien connection: a distinction to explain on your own
When comparing the book’s transmitter systems, name the recycled molecule: AChE breaks down acetylcholine and choline returns for reuse. DAT, NET and SERT illustrate intact monoamine uptake instead. Enzymatic breakdown, membrane uptake and separate vesicular loading are different events.
