Learning objective
Distinguish physical dependence from addiction and explain why vulnerability cannot be reduced to a single cause.
Define the terms separately
Physical dependence is adaptation that can produce withdrawal when exposure is reduced. Tolerance is reduced response under a specified comparison. Addiction concerns a pattern of compulsive use or impaired control despite harmful consequences. Dependence can occur during prescribed treatment without that behavioral pattern. The chapter discusses substance use disorder terminology; its short teaching summary is not a complete diagnostic checklist.
Multiple influences can interact
Drug properties, route and speed of exposure, inherited vulnerability, developmental history, stress, learning, social conditions and access to support can influence patterns of use. A biological explanation does not erase personal context, and a social explanation does not imply that neural changes are unreal. The biopsychosocial approach asks how these influences interact rather than choosing only one.
Comorbidity and historical context
Comorbidity means conditions occur together, such as substance-related and mood difficulties. Co-occurrence alone does not establish which came first, whether one caused the other or whether shared influences contributed. The book’s prevalence, cost and policy examples describe particular historical sources. This study lesson does not present those percentages or historical prescribing rules as current facts.

Explain it without notes
Give distinct definitions of tolerance, dependence and addiction.
Compare your explanation 1
Tolerance: reduced response. Physical dependence: withdrawal vulnerability after adaptation. Addiction: compulsive or poorly controlled use despite harm. A single case may involve more than one, but the terms are not synonyms.
What can a comorbidity statistic establish by itself?
Compare your explanation 2
It can describe co-occurrence in a defined sample. It cannot independently establish direction of causation or a universal explanation.
